How Long Does a Towel Last Before It Turns?

A towel that dries well after each use lasts a few uses – a common rule of thumb is about three to four times, or once a week. If it smells musty, it's due, however often it's been used.
What We've Been Sold as Normal
That you're clean when you dry off after a shower, so a towel hardly gets dirty. Your skin is clean afterward – but the towel collects whatever was left on it.
The Honest Explanation
What collects in a towel. Moisture, skin flakes, a little skin oil, and the germs that live on skin anyway. That's harmless in itself. It becomes a problem when the towel stays damp for a long time: germs multiply and it starts to smell.
Why drying matters more than counting. A towel spread out on a rail that dries quickly stays fresh longer than one scrunched up on a hook. A poorly ventilated bathroom shortens the time.
Rules of thumb. Wash bath towels after about three to four uses, or once a week. Hand towels by the sink, which lots of hands use, more often – every few days. Guest towels after every visit.
The most reliable signal. The smell. A musty towel is due, even if it's only been used twice.
Washing. Towels can usually take 60 °C. Let them dry thoroughly before they go into the cupboard.
When to wash more often. With infections, fungal skin infections, or if the towel is also used for intimate areas. In those cases, everyone gets their own.

“After a shower I'm clean, so the towel stays clean too.”
Your skin is clean; the towel still absorbs what it gives off.
“You need a fresh towel every day.”
Not necessarily. Dried well, it lasts longer.
“Sharing a towel is no problem.”
Usually not day to day. With infections or athlete's foot, it is.
“It only smells once it's really dirty.”
The opposite: a smell is often the first sign it stayed damp too long.

A towel doesn't turn after a fixed number of showers, but after hours spent damp. Hang it up, let it dry, smell it – that tells you more than any schedule.
