Clean means functional. Sterile means lifeless. The body needs the former, not the latter.
Hygiene gets equated with being germ-free. Anything containing bacteria is considered dirty. Cleaning is supposed to remove odor, moisture, and life entirely. In the intimate area especially, “more cleanliness” is sold as safer.
Skin and mucous membranes are colonized. These microorganisms are part of how the body works. They protect against irritation, infection, and the wrong microbes taking over. Cleaning that's too aggressive removes not only dirt but also protection. The result is dry, vulnerable skin and an unstable balance. Cleanliness means removing residue while preserving structures.
“The more germ-free, the better.”
Being germ-free weakens the body's protective mechanisms.
“Disinfection is hygiene.”
Disinfection is a medical intervention.
“Bacteria are bad.”
Many are functionally necessary.
“Everything has to smell and feel brand new.”
Irritation is not a sign of cleanliness.
Hygiene fails when it works against biology. Clean is the state in which the body functions without disruption.
