Intimate Hygiene for Men – What's Enough?

Published: 24.08.2026 1 min read
In Short

For men, warm water is enough – on the penis, the testicles and the anus. Soap and overzealous scrubbing do more harm than good.

What We've Been Sold as Normal

Men's care usually means: lather up hard, plenty of fragrance, done. The rest doesn't get discussed.

The Honest Explanation

The skin in the intimate area is sensitive in men too. Smegma collects under the foreskin – that's normal and comes off with warm water, no soap needed. Around the anus, water cleans more thoroughly and more gently than dry paper, which rubs and leaves residue behind.

Aggressive shower gels disturb the skin flora and can lead to itching and dryness. Once a day with clear water is enough; pull the foreskin back while you do it and dry off properly afterwards.

What You Often Hear – and What's True

“Lathering up hard gets you cleanest.”
No. Soap irritates, water is enough.

“Smegma is a sign of illness.”
No. It's normal and easy to rinse away.

“You only wipe your anus with paper.”
Water cleans more thoroughly and more gently.

“Fragrance means hygiene.”
No. Fragrance only covers up.

Putting It in Context

Male intimate hygiene is unspectacular: warm water, foreskin back, pat dry. Less product, less irritation.
