A fixed bidet seat needs water. Almost every toilet already has the connection for it, though – at the angle valve the tank is attached to. Truly without any connection, only the portable version works.
“Water connection” sounds like a plumber, an invoice, and a wall opened up. So people look for a solution that does without one – and miss that the connection has been there all along, half a meter from the toilet.
The question has two honest answers, depending on what is meant.
Without a new connection: that is the normal case. Every toilet gets water for flushing, and that water arrives through a small valve on the wall – the angle valve. A T-piece goes in between the valve and the tank, and the seat draws from it. No new pipe, no wall, no contractor. Tools: usually a screwdriver.
Without any connection at all: then only the portable butt shower remains – a bottle with a nozzle that you fill yourself. It needs no valve, no hose, and no fixed toilet. That is the answer for rentals with a concealed tank, for travel, or for anyone who wants to try it first.
Why the water is cold: the tank is on the cold water line — a toilet has no need for hot. A seat that branches off there gets mains temperature, around 15 degrees. That reads as fresh, not icy. If you want it warm, you need a device that heats it itself: an electric seat with an instant heater. That is the real difference between the two designs.
A fixed seat that works entirely without a water line does not exist. Anyone offered one is looking at either a tank that has to be refilled constantly, or a product description using “without a water connection” to mean “without a new water connection.”
“You need a plumber for that.”
Usually not. The T-piece goes between the angle valve and the tank hose – comparable to connecting a washing machine.
“You're not allowed to do that in a rental.”
Nothing structural is changed and everything comes back out without a trace. With a concealed tank the angle valve can be hard to reach, though – worth checking first.
“Without a connection the pressure is too weak.”
With the portable version the pressure comes from your hand. Less constant, but precisely adjustable.
“So you're stuck with cold water — that's unpleasant.”
Mains water sits around 15 degrees. It reads as fresh, not icy. If you want it warm, you now know why that takes a different device.
“A seat without a connection has a built-in tank.”
Those exist, and they rarely pay off: the tank holds little and has to be refilled after every use.
The right question is not “does it work without a water connection” but “can I reach my angle valve.” If you can, no new connection is needed. If you cannot, the portable butt shower is the more honest answer than a tank.
