Will a Bidet Seat Fit My Toilet?

Bathroom ceramics have a reputation for being made to order, with nothing fitting anything else. In fact, toilets in Europe are largely standardized – which is why you buy toilet seats at the hardware store and not from whoever made the bowl.

A bidet seat sits between the ceramic and the toilet seat. So it has to fit both. Two things decide that.

The shape of the bowl. Seen from above, the opening is either equally round at the front and back – a round or O-shape. Or it tapers towards the back and looks like a D lying on its side – the D-shape. The difference is obvious once you look for it. Seats exist for both, and they are not interchangeable.

The hole spacing. At the back of the ceramic are two holes that the toilet seat is bolted through. The distance between their centers is between 15 and 18 centimeters on the vast majority of toilets. A tape measure is enough.

One more thing that helps: the space behind the bowl. The seat adds a few centimeters at the back. If the toilet stands very close to the wall, or the tank sits directly on it, it is worth checking whether there is room there.

“It fits every toilet.”
Almost. With very old, very small, or non-standard ceramics it can get tight.

“I have to unscrew the old seat first to measure.”
No. Shape and hole spacing are visible with the seat still mounted.

“It doesn't work with a wall-hung toilet.”
It does. How it is mounted makes no difference; only shape and hole spacing count.

“If the shape is off, washers will sort it out.”
Not sensibly. If the seat does not sit flat, the toilet seat wobbles and the gasket suffers.
