Chafing Between the Thighs – What Helps?

Published: 17.08.2026 1 min read
In Short

Chafing comes from friction on damp skin, not from dirt. Keep it dry and reduce the friction – don't scrub.

What We've Been Sold as Normal

People who get chafed assume poor hygiene and wash even harder. That only breaks the irritated skin down further.

The Honest Explanation

In heat, during sport, or in tight clothes, folds of skin rub against each other. Sweat softens the skin, friction wears away the top protective layer – it stings, reddens, weeps. The medical term is intertrigo. The trigger is friction plus moisture, not dirt.

What helps: clean with clear water, pat dry gently, keep the area dry and airy. Soap and rubbing make it worse.

What You Often Hear – and What's True

“It comes from not washing enough.”
No. It comes from friction and moisture.

“Lathering up hard disinfects it.”
Wrong. Soap irritates broken skin further.

“Powder solves everything.”
Only partly. It keeps things dry, but it doesn't replace less friction.

“Tight clothing makes no difference.”
It does. It creates exactly that friction.

Putting It in Context

Chafing is a friction problem, not a hygiene problem. Water, dryness and air heal it – not more scrubbing. For weeping spots that won't heal, see a doctor.
