Postpartum Bleeding – How Long Does It Last, and What's Normal?

In Short

Postpartum bleeding (lochia) is the wound discharge of a healing uterus. It usually lasts four to six weeks, getting lighter and paler as it goes. If it gets much heavier again, smells bad, or comes with a fever, that's one for your midwife or doctor.

What We've Been Sold as Normal

That the bleeding after birth is over in a few days, roughly like a period. Many people are surprised by how long it lasts and how heavy it is at first. Not because anything is wrong, but because nobody mentioned it beforehand.

The Honest Explanation

Where it comes from. Where the placenta was attached, a wound remains inside the uterus. It heals over weeks, and what drains away in the process is lochia: blood, tissue remnants, mucus.

How much. It's heaviest in the first few days, often heavier than a strong period. After that it decreases day by day. It can briefly increase while breastfeeding, because the uterus contracts.

How long. Usually four to six weeks – shorter for some, a little longer for others. After a C-section it's often somewhat lighter but lasts about as long.

What helps day to day. Pads rather than tampons, because the wound is open. Change them often. For cleaning, clear lukewarm water is enough – skip soap, intimate sprays, and vaginal douches.

When to get in touch: if the bleeding suddenly turns much heavier and bright red again after days of easing off, if it smells bad, if you have a fever or strong pain in your lower abdomen, or if it suddenly stops altogether and pain or fever set in.

What You Often Hear – and What's True

“It should be over after two weeks.”
No. Up to six weeks is common.

“Tampons are more practical.”
Not after giving birth. While the wound heals, pads are the safe choice.

“It's equally heavy for everyone.”
No. The amount and duration vary a lot from person to person.

“Once it stops, everything has healed.”
The bleeding ends; the recovery takes longer. Aftercare still matters.

Putting It in Context

Postpartum bleeding lasts a long time, it's heavy at first, and it's normal. What matters isn't any single week but the direction: lighter and paler is good.
