If you go ten times a day, you wipe ten times a day. Sore skin usually comes from the paper, not from your gut. Water – lukewarm, without rubbing – is the gentler route.
“Wipe thoroughly and it's clean.” With one or two trips a day, that adds up. With eight or ten it does not – at that point the paper itself is the irritant, and being more thorough makes it worse, not better.
The skin around the anus is thin, has barely any horny layer, and is built for moisture. Dry paper works mechanically: it abrades. Once a day the skin absorbs that; ten times a day it does not. On top of that, with loose stool the residue is alkaline and contains enzymes – it attacks the skin further if it stays there.
The result is a loop many people know: it burns, so you wipe more carefully and more often, so it gets sorer. Wet wipes look like the answer but bring preservatives and fragrance with them – a second source of irritation on already damaged skin.
What helps the skin is unremarkable: lukewarm water, no rubbing, then patting dry instead of wiping. No soap, no fragrance, no disinfectant. Water dissolves what is stuck without mechanical pressure – that is the whole difference.
The distinction matters: this is skin care, not treatment. It changes nothing about why you are going so often. Anyone with loose or very frequent stools for weeks should have it investigated – because of the cause, and because ongoing loss of fluid and nutrients has consequences of its own.
“Wet wipes are gentler than paper.”
Mechanically yes, chemically often not. Preservatives and fragrance irritate already damaged skin further.
“Sore skin needs disinfecting.”
No. Disinfectant dries the skin out and disturbs its flora. Clean does not mean sterile here.
“Hot water cleans better.”
It strips more oil and irritates more. Lukewarm is enough.
“Once the skin heals, the problem is solved.”
Only the symptom. Why you are going so often stays a medical question.
Sore skin is a problem of its own, and it can be solved separately – you do not have to put up with it until the cause is clear. Less friction, more water, no additives. For everything underneath: see a doctor.
