Enough water for one go, a closure that stays leakproof in your bag, and a nozzle that aims where it should. A bottle without a battery is sturdier and lighter – an electric one is more convenient but needs power and more space.
That when you travel, you make do with whatever's there: paper, wet wipes, improvisation. But anyone who cleans with water at home quickly notices what's missing on the road.
The two designs. The bottle with a nozzle: fill it, aim, and squeeze by hand. And the electric travel bidet with a battery and pump: an even spray at the press of a button, but heavier, with a charging cable and a battery that can run flat.
Capacity. It has to last one go without refilling. About half a liter is a good figure. Much less often isn't enough; much more gets unwieldy.
The closure. The underrated feature. A travel bidet sits between clothes and documents. The nozzle should close or fold away so leftover water doesn't run into your bag.
Carry-on. Empty, a bottle can go through security; fill it afterward at a sink. Electric devices with a built-in battery belong in your carry-on anyway.
The nozzle. It should be long enough to reach easily from the front or back, and shaped so the spray doesn't fan out. Rinse it briefly after use and let it dry open.
“A travel bidet is only for long-haul trips.”
It helps anywhere you don't have your own toilet: festivals, camping, trains, the office.
“Electric is always better.”
More convenient, yes. But heavier and dependent on the battery. A bottle always works.
“You can't use one on a plane.”
You can. Fill it at the sink, then use it in the cabin toilet.
“A water bottle does the same job.”
In an emergency. Without a nozzle, though, the water goes everywhere except where you're aiming.
A good travel bidet goes unnoticed in your luggage and doesn't leak there. Everything else is comfort – to weigh against weight, battery, and space.
