Clean gently, don’t scrub. Diarrhea irritates the skin quickly, and the wrong hygiene makes it worse.
Diarrhea gets treated as a state of emergency. All that counts is getting “somehow clean.” We accept burning, soreness, and raw skin as unavoidable. Yet it’s often not the diarrhea itself, but how we handle things afterward.
Frequent, loose stool wears on the skin. On top of that comes constant wiping.
Dry paper creates friction, especially when you clean again and again. Water cleans more thoroughly and more gently. Important: lukewarm, little pressure, no additives. Hygiene here doesn’t mean maximal, but as little strain as possible.
“You have to wipe especially thoroughly”
No. More friction usually makes everything worse.
“Wet wipes are better”
Not necessarily. Fragrances and preservatives can irritate.
“Water isn’t enough”
It is. Clean is a question of removal, not chemistry.
“This is only relevant for sensitive skin”
Diarrhea makes every skin sensitive.
The body is in a stressful phase. Hygiene should relieve it, not demand more of it. Cleanliness without punishment.
On your next trip to the bathroom, test whether water burns less than paper. If yes, stick with it. If no, drop it again.
