Many people find it soothing. Warm water relaxes the sphincter and cleans without rubbing. Lukewarm is better than hot, and clear water is better than additives. It doesn't replace treatment.
That with discomfort around the anus, more helps more: hotter, longer, with something added. But irritated skin in particular responds better to the opposite.
What warm water does. Warmth relaxes muscles, including the sphincter. Many people with hemorrhoids experience that as relief, especially after a bowel movement. On top of that, water loosens residue without any rubbing – and rubbing is exactly what irritated skin tolerates poorly.
Why lukewarm and not hot. Hot water is hard on the skin, dries it out, and can strain your circulation. Pleasantly warm, roughly like a baby's bath, is enough.
Two ways. A short sitz bath in clear warm water for a few minutes. Or rinsing after going to the toilet – which works every time and needs no basin.
Additives. Salts, oils, or herbs aren't necessary and can irritate sensitive skin further. If you want to use something specific, check with your doctor first.
Afterward. Pat gently and let it dry. Moisture that lingers for hours irritates in its own way.
What it can't do. Shrink enlarged hemorrhoids or stop bleeding. Blood, severe pain, or a new, hard, painful lump should be checked by a doctor.
“The hotter, the better.”
No. Hot irritates the skin. Warm is enough.
“Cold water is better because it reduces swelling.”
Some find brief cooling pleasant with swelling. For daily cleaning, lukewarm is gentler.
“An additive in the bath heals faster.”
That isn't proven, but it can irritate.
“Warm water replaces the ointment.”
It doesn't replace prescribed treatment. It makes cleaning gentler.
With hemorrhoids, warm water isn't a therapy but the gentlest way to get clean. And when getting clean is what hurts every day, that's no small thing.
