What Does a Bidet Seat Really Cost?

Published: 14.09.2026 2 min read
In Short

The purchase is nearly the whole price. You usually install it yourself, and the water costs a fraction of a cent per use. The difference between the versions pays for comfort, not for getting cleaner.

What We've Been Sold as Normal

That water on your backside is an expensive business: a device, a contractor, a water bill. Paper, on the other hand, counts as free. It isn't – it just gets bought so casually along with everything else that nobody adds it up.

The Honest Explanation

Purchase. There are three tiers, and each buys something different. Our portable butt shower costs €19.90: a bottle you fill yourself. The bidet seat without electricity costs €99 and stays fixed to the toilet, with cold water from the pipe. The electric seat costs €249 and adds warm water, a dryer, a heated seat, and a remote. You choose the hose length to suit your bathroom; the price stays the same.

Installation. As a rule, zero. Seat between the ceramic and the toilet seat, T-piece on the angle valve, done. Tools: a screwdriver. The one exception: the electric seat needs an outlet within reach. If there isn't one, an electrician comes into it – and that is then the most expensive item on the whole bill.

Water. One fill of the portable butt shower is 450 milliliters. At German water and wastewater rates, that's a fraction of a cent. A seat uses a similarly small amount, depending on how long you use it.

Electricity. Only for the electric seat. How much depends mainly on whether the heated seat runs all the time or only when needed.

What you no longer need. Most of the paper. One sheet is usually enough for drying, and with a dryer not even that.

What You Often Hear – and What's True

“Your water bill will go up.”
Not measurably. A single toilet flush uses many times what a butt shower does.

“Installation costs extra.”
Usually not. Only for the electric seat when there's no outlet within reach.

“Cheaper means less clean.”
All three versions clean with water. The price decides the temperature and the convenience, not the result.

“Electric is only worth it if you want luxury.”
It's worth it for anyone who doesn't like cold water. That's a matter of how it feels, not of how demanding you are.

Putting It in Context

Almost all of a bidet seat's cost is on the receipt. After that, it costs next to nothing. So the question isn't whether you can afford it, but what water temperature is worth it to you.
