The gut is working, but the water balance isn't right. This is a functional state, not a disease.
That stool is either “normal” or “diarrhea.” That everything in between is harmless or meaningless. And that consistency depends only on diet.
Stool is thickened in the large intestine. In the process, the intestinal wall draws out water. When this process is shortened or incomplete, the stool stays soft but still formed. This can happen due to faster intestinal transit, a changed gut flora, hormonal influences, or mechanical pressure. The stool isn't liquid, but it is unstable.
“That already is diarrhea.”
Diarrhea is unformed and watery. Soft stool is something different.
“More fiber sorts it out.”
Fiber can bind, but for some people it makes the situation worse.
“It's psychological.”
Stress affects gut movement, but it doesn't replace a physical explanation.
“As long as there's no pain, none of it matters.”
Consistency is a signal, even without pain.
Very soft stool shows that the gut is working, but not regulated optimally. It's not an alarm, but a hint.
