How Much Water Pressure Does a Bidet Seat Need?

Published: 08.10.2026 1 min read
In Short

Normal mains pressure is enough. In German homes it's usually somewhere around two to four bar, and a bidet seat needs only part of that. If the spray is too weak, it's almost always the valve or the hose – not the pipe.

What We've Been Sold as Normal

The worry that “it definitely won't be enough at my place” – old building, top floor, weak shower. Yet a bidet seat doesn't need much. If anything, the question is how to get the spray gentle enough.

The Honest Explanation

Why little pressure is enough. The nozzle is small, and the point is a targeted spray, not a lot of water. The same pressure that fills the tank is plenty.

How to adjust the spray. With the lever on the seat. If it's too strong even at the gentlest setting, close the angle valve a little – then less water arrives overall.

If the spray is too weak, it's usually one of these:

  • The angle valve isn't fully open.
  • The hose is kinked or pinched.
  • A strainer in one of the connections is clogged with limescale or dirt.
  • The pipe genuinely has low pressure – in which case the tank fills noticeably slowly too.

If the spray is too strong, open the lever less or turn the angle valve back a little. That's all it takes.

And with an electric seat? There, the water is heated inside the device and its own pump controls the spray. Normal mains pressure is still enough to supply it.

What You Often Hear – and What's True

“In an old building, the pressure won't be enough.”
As a rule, it will. If the tank fills normally, it's enough for the seat.

“Top floor means too little pressure.”
Only if the shower and the tank are already struggling.

“More pressure cleans better.”
No. A comfortable, targeted spray cleans – a hard one is just unpleasant.

“You need a pressure reducer.”
Not at normal household pressure. The lever and the valve are enough to regulate it.

Putting It in Context

The question is rarely whether the pressure is enough, but how to set it gently enough. If it really is too weak, check the valve and the hose – the cause is usually two quick checks away.
